16 May Weekend Round Up – Ironman Prep
Aim of this weekend was to simulate as much of the IM distance off the back of a heavy week of training. Principle being that it replicates fatigue playing a part in the race.
For me this started with a swim over at Bray and seeing how far I could go in an hour, feeling good as hit 3.4km.
Then some breakfast, nuts and gluten granola, about 90grams in total and some water. Then off for long run. Water and energy drink in tow. Set off slightly slower than previously. But it proved to be a very plan. The miles started to tick by and felt good. Quick stop at to wave a duck tour and take of photo of Windsor Castle and off again. Pacing as going well but could feel I was able to push on a little and need to work on making this more consistent with stride length. Back up the hill and I was running not leaning over stumbling up. Hit 30km in a PB and still had running in me. Now looking forward to June, even as I got straight in to the cold bath. Might have started to enjoy the relieving feel of the cold water and stayed in too long.
Sunday morning, off on the bike. Great new couple of roads taken making the ride more interesting, however as it went from cold to warm still too many layer on and not enough water. Suffered for the last hour.
Good learning for IM make sure much better hydrated.
Total scores on the board. 3.4km swim, 31.5km run, 143km ride.
